Have you driven through Sydney University recently? If you haven’t, we suggest you do. The Sydney University No.2 Oval and Grandstand redevelopment is really starting to take shape. What an exciting year 2016 will be for Sydney Uni Sport and Sydney University Football Club with this brand new world class-facility!
At our home game this year in Round 18 against Northern Suburbs we said “goodbye” to No.1 Oval after 153 years of calling it home. A big change to make the move to the new Grandstand on University Oval No.2 in 2016.
The Grandstand will accommodate 1200 spectators, as well as feature a high performance gym/warm-up room, change rooms, medical facilities for players, a canteen and bar, function centre and an indoor training centre – and more!
In late September this year, a major announcement was made regarding funding towards the development with direct ties to SUFC. A generous gift to fund the high performance gym within the grandstand was donated by David Mortimer AO. David’s donation provides the support to turn the gym into a world-class facility. It will give athletes and elite sporting teams at Sydney University access to state-of-the-art training equipment to enhance their training and skill development, with the gym set to feature free weights and pin-loaded machines, cardio equipment, lifting platforms and ancillary fitness equipment.
Pu quite simply by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness’ Executive Director, Rob Smithies:
“David Mortimer’s gift will enable the development of world’s best practice sporting infrastructure which gives our athletes a chance to more fully achieve their potential on the world stage.”
Although not complete yet, the structure is in place (see below some images taken recently on the construction site) and you can start to get the feel of just how incredible it will be!

Although construction is underway, it is still not too late to contribute to the ‘Building on Excellence’ Campaign to assist with the project and to help maintain the proud tradition of sporting achievements at the University.
