The SUFC Country Scholarship was established in 2026 by former players of the club to support Sydney University Football Club players from rural and regional backgrounds.
The scholarship is designed to assist with living expenses while recipients study at the University of Sydney and play for SUFC, with a particular focus on players aspiring to higher honours in rugby union.
The scholarship provides fee relief at St John’s College.

The University of Sydney Elite Athlete Program (run through Sydney Uni Sport) is a long-standing initiative established in 1990 to support elite and emerging student-athletes in balancing high-level sporting commitments with university studies. It has helped over 2,500 Sydney University students excel in both academia and sport, making it one of Australia’s most established and successful programs of its kind.
The program provides comprehensive assistance, including sporting scholarships, dedicated staff support for academic and athletic challenges, access to high-performance resources, and priority for those involved in university-administered programs or Sydney University sporting clubs. Membership is open to currently enrolled University of Sydney students, with applications typically detailed in their annual Student Athlete Prospectus.
This differs from the university’s separate Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme, which offers admission adjustments (like bonus points) for entry based on elite commitments. The Elite Athlete Program focuses on ongoing support during studies rather than admission.
The Buildcorp Rugby Scholarship is administered by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness as part of its Elite Athlete Program. This is a perpetual scholarship which will be offered annually to an emerging young SUFC rugby player, who is studying a building or engineering-related discipline, relevant to work at Buildcorp.
The preferred applicant will need to be playing rugby for SUFC and studying at the University of Sydney, they will have completed at least the 2nd year of their degree, or be engaged in post-graduate study, with either their undergraduate or post-graduate studies relating to work at Buildcorp. They will be academically solid and have demonstrated their commitment to hard work, team spirit and Buildcorp values on and off the field. While not a requirement, it would be hoped that the successful candidate sees a future career for themself at Buildcorp.
Other than the obvious prestige associated with being the recipient of a scholarship from the University of Sydney, there will be a financial component to the scholarship. The successful candidate will also be given the opportunity to obtain work experience at Buildcorp.
