Kagiassis makes a point
Christian Kagiassis racked up 30 points in Sydney University’s 33-10 win over Eastern Suburbs in their Round 7 Shute Shield clash at Sydney University Football Ground on Saturday.
The chunky winger crossed for four tries and landed two conversions and two penalty goals after taking over the kicking duties from fullback Angus Roberts.
The Students unveiled their tactics on the back of a rock-solid scrum in the third minute when they ran the ball from their own line with winger Matthew Narracott making inroads down the right flank.
The field position resulted in a three-phase raid that saw hooker Christopher Talakai send Kagiassis over for his first points contribution of the afternoon.
Easts hit back immediately with a 10-point haul from five-eighth Archie King, who landed a penalty goal and backed that up with a converted try on the back of good work from flanker Rowan Perry and winger Fetongi Tuinauvai.
But it was the Students who went to the break with a 13-10 lead after Kagiassis crossed for his second try and landed a penalty goal.
The first half was an evenly-fought affair in the set-pieces and the open, but the hosts were looking dangerous when the passes stuck and they kept their attack alive.
And that’s what eventuated in the second half as they took control of possession and position with quick ruck ball and some clinical finishing.
Kagiassis was on the end of another two attacking raids as the points racked up. Having scored a mountain of points in his Colts career, he’s now starting to pile them on a grade career that only began three weeks ago.
The win moved Sydney University from fifth to third on the competition ladder and helped the club move to second in the Club Championship.
Randwick head the Shute Shield on 30 points, with Eastwood (26), Sydney University (26), Southern Districts (25), Eastern Suburbs (23) and Manly (22) making up the top six.
Randwick also head the Club Championship on 1234 points, from Sydney university (1167) and Eastern Suburbs (992).
The Students host Northern Suburbs this Saturday.
