While we had 7 teams playing out at Eastwood, we also fielded one team against the Brumby Runners at St John’s Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Brumby Runners are the B side for the ACT Brumbies Super Rugby team. Made up of fringe Brumby players, as well as some players who were on the bench the following night against the Waratahs but only played a short amount of game time, they were always going to be a very tough opposition. Brumby players including Rory Arnold, Robbie Coleman and even our own James Dargaville were all named in the side (see full team list here).
With many considering SUFC the underdogs, our boys were not going to let anything through easily – in fact right from the outset our boys made it clear they were there to win.
SUFC started strong, scoring first with a beautiful cross field kick from Angus Roberts off a 5m scrum to a screaming Christian Yassmin to dot down. At half time SUFC still led the visitors 12-5.
After the break, a couple of converted trials to Jake Gordon and Mitchell Whiteley saw Uni take a 26-10 lead, but the Brumbies were not going to back down. The Brumby Runners hit back coming to within 2 points at 31-29 with 5 minutes remaining.
The Students dug deep and held out the Runners, taking the win.
Head Coach, Tim Davidson spoke very highly of the boys and their efforts.
“I am incredibly proud of what the players achieved as a team today. They did everything they said they were going to do and toughed out a very hard fought win” said Davidson.
“There is still plenty to work on but the desire and willingness to play for each other was fantastic to witness.”
