The University of Sydney has finished fourth at the third round of the Aon Uni 7s series hosted this weekend at the University of Queensland, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
The Students began their round three campaign with an emphatic win against defending champions, Macquarie University, 19-7.
Scoring three tries to Macquarie’s one, Chantelle Miell, Sydney Gregson and Liv White crossed the line for the Students, with Tiarne Cavanagh adding two conversions.
They backed it up with a win over Bond University, 27-14, where Jakiya ‘Winx’ Whitfeld picked up hat-trick, followed by a disappointing end-of-day loss to Adelaide University, 25-5.
On day two, the Students started strong with a hard-fought 22-17 win over the University of Canberra. Tilly Vaughan Fowler scored a double, while Whitfeld and White crossed the line for one each.
In their semi against the the University of Queensland, the Students scored in the first minute causing plenty of excitment on the sideline, however the 2017 champions came back to claim a 22-12 victory.
Later that afternoon, facing off against Macquarie University in the third-place playoff, Sydney University scored the first two tries of the game (both in the opening two minutes) however went down to the experienced side, 24-12, finishing the round in fourth place.
Chelsea Harris, Sydney University Team Manager commented on the team’s impressive performance this round.
“The girls working really hard to move their way up the ladder,” she said.
“After finishing ninth last round, and coming so close to finishing third just two weeks later in Queensland, it really is testament to the girls’ hard work and hunger to keep improving.”
Griffith University were named champions of the round, with the University of Queensland finishing second and Macquarie University third.
Currently, the University of Sydney is sitting fifth on the series ladder with two rounds remaining.
The fourth round will be played in two weeks time at Bond University on the Gold Coast.
