Joyce’s Journey with SUFC

What inspired you to join SUFC?

“I was inspired to join SUFC because my son, Brad, was playing for the Club.”

What’s your favorite memory at SUFC?

“My favourite memories are the wonderful run of premierships in the 2010’s and gathering with the players of both teams in the Shute Shield games in the No1 Oval grandstand for speeches and great bonhomie on both sides.”

Joyce’s Admired Players and Fun Moments

Which players do you admire most from your time with the club?

“My favourite players are John Langford (of course), Anthony Okely, Richard Maher, Tim Davidson, and in the present day I admire Jack Matthews. They are all players of great character and give their all to the team. They are personal friends of Brad’s to this day (except Tim Davidson and Jack Matthews).”

Funny or unexpected moments:

“I can recall two instances of torrential weather when SUFC persisted with the game. We had to retreat to the last row of the No 1 grandstand to avoid the weather. It was a lake, and it was difficult to separate one team from the other as their jumpers turned to dark grey. Both players and spectators thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.”

Life as an SUFC Member

How has being a part of the club impacted your life off the field?

“SUFC has had a wonderful impact on my life and that of my family, particularly Brad. I have made many friends in the club, particularly the Gold Members, and we have travelled together to more than one Rugby World Cup and enjoyed many a dinner and social occasion.”

What would you like to see the club achieve on the field in 2025?

“Success would be nice for the Club in 2025. The Colts did particularly well this year and it would be great to see this follow through to Senior Grades. Congratulations to Second Grade this year.”

One piece of advice you’d give to new members: “New Club members should gather in the function room and bar after the game and introduce themselves to the friendly faces there.”
