Sydney University Football Club is proud to celebrate a historic moment in our club’s legacy: Nick Champion de Crespigny has become the 9th SUFC player to captain the Wallabies, continuing a tradition of leadership that spans over a century.
Nick’s journey is one of dedication and resilience. Alumni of St Andrew’s College (SAC) and the University of Sydney, where he earned a Bachelor of Economics, Nick joined SUFC in 2015 and quickly rose through the ranks. With 72 First Grade games and 87 club appearances, he became a cornerstone of our First-Grade side, winning multiple Shute Shield titles and earning the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
His appointment as Wallabies captain is a reflection not only of his personal character but of the values SUFC instils in its players — leadership, humility, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
A Legacy That Spans Generations
Nick joins a distinguished list of SUFC Wallaby captains, beginning with Herbert “Paddy” Moran, who led Australia’s first tour to Britain in 1908–09. Paddy, a medical student at USYD and SUFC captain in 1907, famously told the story of his teammate Bill, who believed that drinking five or six pints of beer before a match improved his vigour and speed. In one memorable moment, Bill emerged from a ruck, sprinted eighty yards, and dove triumphantly across the goal line — only to realise he’d scored over his own line.
That anecdote, while humorous, highlights just how far the game has come. From the days of amateur rugby and post-match pub tales, SUFC has evolved into a high-performance environment that produces elite athletes and national leaders.
A Club of Captains
Nick follows in the footsteps of SUFC greats such as:
- Herbert “Paddy” Moran – Captained the first Wallabies tour to Britain in 1908–09, Medicine Student with 7 First Grade games
- Johnnie Wallace – 1927–28 Waratahs tour captain, Rhodes Scholar, and rowing Blue
- John Solomon – Wallaby captain from 1953–55, Medicine student with 44 First Grade games
- Dick Tooth – 1957 captain, Science and Medicine student, 55 First Grade games
- Nick Farr-Jones – 1991 World Cup-winning captain, Law graduate, 150 First Grade games
- Phil Waugh – 2000s captain, Master of Commerce & International Business, 47 First Grade games
- Dean Mumm – 2015 captain, 56 First Grade games
- Will Skelton – 2023 World Cup captain, 13 First Grade games
Each of these men carried the SUFC spirit onto the international stage, representing not just Australia, but the values and traditions of our club.
More Than Just Rugby
What sets SUFC apart is our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. Our captains have studied Medicine, Law, Economics, Science, Arts, and Commerce, proving that leadership on the field is matched by excellence off it.
Nick Champion de Crespigny is the latest embodiment of this tradition — a leader forged in the classroom, the gym, and the rugby field.
