On Saturday November 21st at the Great Hall at Sydney University, members of the University and Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness gathered together to congratulate the newest recipients of Sydney University Blue and Gold awards for 2015.

The Blue is the highest sporting honour at the University of Sydney. It is awarded for outstanding performance in a sport during a twelve month period, and is awarded by the Blues Committee to any student who, under the rules of Australian University Sport, is eligible to participate in Australian University Championships or Games and is recommended by that Club.

A Gold may be awarded by the Blues Committee in recognition of services rendered by a member to a Constituent Club or SUSF for a period of at least seven years. Nominations for Gold awards may be made by Clubs, the Management Committee or the General Committee.

In 2015, SUFC saw four of its members awarded a Blue or Gold; Tomas Robertson, Jim Stewart, Charles Carter and Dr Katherine Rae.

On behalf of the entire club we would like to congratulate Tom, Jim, Charles and Kath on this incredible achievement – such a proud day for the club.

Sydney University Golds awarded in Rugby:

Charles Carter

  • Charles has been involved with Sydney University Football Club in a number of areas since 1995, from helping with player recruitment, to providing mentoring and employment support to players trying to attain a trade
  • His greatest involvement however has been through the SUFC Juniors Program in which he has been heavily involved in since its establishment in 2006
  • In his first year as a coach to the Sydney University Juniors in 2007, he took the U13s to the club’s first ever State Championship Premiership, and has coached every year since then
  • Many young players who have been coached by Charles have progressed through to Colts and Grade ranks at SUFC, which has seen the melding of the Sydney University Juniors as an integral pathway to higher levels

Dr Katherine Rae

  • Since 1999 Dr Kath Rae has worked as the Team Doctor for Sydney University Football Club
  • In 2003, while playing for Sydney University Women’s Football Club she was also their team doctor
  • Currently works on game days as the club’s Grade Team Doctor, but also works in conjunction with The Sports Clinic to oversee the entire SUFC medical program
  • While working for SUFC the club has won 12 Club Championships in the Shute Shield, with Dr Kath Rae having significantly contributed to all of these by ensuring all players are fit to play and receive the best treatment and rehabilitation should an injury occur
  • Has also developed a number of relationships with some of the top surgical professionals in NSW to further ensure players receive the top treatment possible

On May 30th 2015, Dr Kath Rae performed a lifesaving procedure on the rugby field to an opposition player who did not have a team doctor. Without her quick thinking medical expertise, paramedics informed SUFC that the player would have surely died. This remarkable effort saw her nominated for a Pride of Australia Bravery Medal
