With the world in a state of tension beset by unnecessary conflict and tension, it’s just a blessing that rugby is about to kick off again to give us some respite.

The conditions were hardly appropriate to wearing a cashmere turtle neck sweater last Saturday. In oppressive heat wave conditions a new look University prevailed over Gordon with a solid 26-19 victory.

With University’s home ground being unavailable due to returfing, the two sides availed themselves of Rockdale’s Redmond Field. A junior rugby ground of yesteryear with high posts, $8.00 the works burgers, coke slushies and the construction of the M6 tunnel along the western touchline. Many thanks to the Rockdale Rugby Club for hosting the game.

Throughout the first half University were pinning the Gordon tartans inside their quarter. The set piece was solid and the backs were moving the ball at every opportunity.

Returning to the Students after his stint in Ireland and the United Kingdom seeking the perfect stout and shepherds pie was starting hooker Declan the bison Moore. Behind him there was a real impact with two burly recruits incidentally from Gordon second rowers Nathaniel Ponozzo and Cameron Wood. A hard hitting and running backrower Dane Tekeria who scored a bullocking try is one to keep an eye out this season.

The players were being judiciously replaced throughout the game to preserve the elasticity of their epidermis as the rainforest temperatures were stifling. Even Ruth Matthews the fullback Jack’s mother was affected by the heat and needed to know the nearest Mecca outlet to acquire some additional drunk elephant hydrating moisturizer.

Two halfbacks from the colt’s program were rotated during the game Ed Bell and Oliver Schmude. Their rapid service to five eighth Sam Bignold allowed the outside backs some space to unleash some speed.
Another newcomer former Brisbane player Shaun Anderson who is a deceptive outside centre set up tries for his winger that flying Fijian club stalwart spring water heir Sepesa Loga-Tarogi.

All in all a solid hit out against a strong opposition in difficult conditions. Combinations are still being developed but the fitness is evident and so is the determination.

Next week University have a full club trial against last year’s premiers Eastern Suburbs at Bellevue Hill.
